- Ad-Aware
- With its ability to scan your RAM, Registry, hard drives, and external storage devices for known data mining, advertising, and tracking components, Ad-aware can easily rid your system of these tracking components, allowing you to maintain a higher degree of privacy while you surf the Web. Ad-aware does and excellent job of finding and removing most adware and spyware components, although you will have to restart and rescan a number of times for a seriously infected machine. We were pleased to see an auto-update feature from within the program that updates the reference list, keeping Ad-aware up-to-date with the latest adware components. Overall, Ad-aware (Standard) should be part of your arsenal to keep your machine free of adware and spyware components. -

Avast scans MSN Messenger, ICQ, Yahoo Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger, mIRC, and Trillian. -

- AVG Anti-Virus System
- AVG performs the same functions found in other antivirus programs. Manually scan your drives. Scan removable media. Schedule automatic tests. Check files on boot up. The most useful feature of all: Scan your email attachments. An antivirus program is only effective if it updates its virus definitions regularly. The Grisoft website says free virus updates are offered at least once a month and AVG has a built-in update feature. We've also noticed that AVG offers updates almost as soon as a new virus threat gets released. I put this program on my secondary computer to test it several months ago and was so happy with the results that I never found a reason to not keep using it. A great free program. -
