- Pictures I've Taken of Superstars
- We live in a mad, mad celebrity culture. Yet only the most motivated of us are out on the red carpet snapping pictures with the stars. Hey, we're not advocating a career in the stalkerazzi here. When Alan Light adds to his glittering collection of celebri-images, he does so with the permission of Mr. and Ms. Big. Well, most of the time. Looking through Alan's photo set is like blasting back in time. Here comes Lucille Ball; there goes Sammy Davis, Jr.; and, wow, that's Richard Pryor and River Phoenix. Ah, the days gone by. Alan's shots of Sylvester Stallone, Tom Cruise, and Mel Gibson reveal that gang looking oh-so-young—and far from the ravages of time or notoriety. Ellen and Anne posed together, Bruce and Demi strolled together, and Robin Williams and his mustache hit the town. For that final parting, we can all be grateful. -

- Pictures You Can't Take Anymore
- The name of this Flickr photo group is both a celebration and a lament: "Pictures You Can't Take Anymore." Isn't that what photography is all about—capturing slices of time that will never happen again? Sometimes they are remarkable moments, and we have a beautiful, expressive photo to celebrate our luck or skill behind the camera. Other times, the value of the image captured during that 500th of a second isn't realized until it's too late. These fleeting visions range from hazy images of lost jazz stars to snapshots of the 1964 New York World's Fair to documentation of a fully outfitted Loch Ness Investigation bus. But they all (and here the group is very strict) come from the photographers themselves—swiping images off news sites is strictly forbidden. Lesson learned: Keep your cameras handy and never stop taking pictures you can't take anymore. -

- Polanoid
- Bent on nothing short of assembling "the biggest Polaroid-picture-collection on the planet," Polanoid has the ambition—and the goods—to make it happen. This gorgeous collection revels in the early days of instant photography when the cameras were weighty, the pictures slid out immediately, and a delete button was nowhere to be found. According to WebMeister, the site's Viennese curator, Polanoid is "hungry for real analog, good-smelling pictures." The Tools section runs through an amazing array of cameras, including the classic 1000 model and the handsome, fold-up SX-70. A fervent "thanksgiving" dishes up the history behind the cult camera. And, finally, there's gallery after gallery of luscious pictures in that distinctive square shape. So, dig up your dad's old instant camera and register with Polanoid. They don't want your money—they just want your pictures. -

- The myth of maximum megapixels
- Camera vendors and consumer electronics retailers sell digital cameras as if the pixel count -- the number of pixels a camera's electronics can capture -- is the most important measure of quality. I'm here to tell you that pixel count has become unimportant almost to the point of irrelevance. Megapixels don't matter anymore.
