- Denim and Leather
- If you like to bang your head, then it's time to comb out your mullet, cut off your shirtsleeves, and raise a lighter in tribute to this wicked site. This homage to the metal gods of the '80s looks past the hairspray and dueling guitar solos to provide a fascinating glimpse into an oft-dissed era of rock. Each band of the hair-metal genre is detailed with plenty of background info, along with sound clips and links to other sites. We all remember Bon Jovi and Mötley Crüe, but do bands such as Britny Fox, Vyper, and Enuff Z'Nuff ring any "hells bells"? In addition to the bitchin' band bios, the site provides a Heavy Metal Thesaurus that defines terms any "true rocker" would know like the back of their leather-and-lace-covered hand. It's here that you will learn the differences between "Hair Metal," "Black Metal," and "Doom Metal." For those about to rock, we truly salute you! -

- Dick Dale
- Dick Dale, surf-guitar hero bar none, plays his left-handed Strat upside down and keeps it strung as a lefty, so that he can more easily solo on the lower notes and create that low, rumbling staccato push associated (thanks to him) with all surf music. Read Dale's personal history (including how he single-handedly created surf music), send off fan e-mail (Dale promises to read every piece he receives), and if you just can't get enough of the man, purchase T-shirts and other memorabilia. -

- Glam Rock Baby
- Back when corporate rock and vapid disco ruled the earth, glam rock reared its flashy head. Combining a late '50s jukebox vibe with platform shoes and wild costumes, glam was an English phenomenon that began in 1970 with T-Rex's hit "Ride a White Swan" and was furthered by the band Sweet in 1971. Then glam hit the big time in 1972, when Marc Bolan became the most popular male vocalist in the U.K. since Elvis. Alas, that year also saw the rise of fake glam a la Elton John. But the imposters couldn't hold a candle to the real glammsters like David Bowie, Gary Glitter, and Alice Cooper. In 1973, glam got its theme song, "Ballroom Blitz" by Sweet, but by 1975 the glitter had begun to tarnish. Glam faded away, but you can find its influence in punk, goth, and other music trends. So get it on, bang a gong. -

- John Coltrane
- Long recognized as one of the premier saxophonists of the 20th century, John Coltrane produced a remarkable amount of material, both as a band leader and a sideman. This site beautifully combines the music, the man, and his legacy. Starting with the basics, it offers a comprehensive discography, a brief biography, and a nice audio sampler of Trane's music. Beyond that, you'll find information on the John Coltrane Foundation, which works to provide opportunities for talented young musicians to learn and play. Finally, there are links to related artists and selected jazz resources from academia, the music business, and beyond. It's an impressive site, and rightly so, since it honors the life and work of a truly legendary artist. -
