- 50 Coolest Song Parts
- Movie buffs have favorite scenes, bookworms have treasured passages, and, yep, pop-music fans have favorite riffs, solos, and screams. This site from the list-happy folks at RetroCrush counts down the 50 coolest song parts, because, as they say, "sometimes there are pieces of songs that are cooler than the song itself." So do these guys know what they're talking about? We were dubious when we saw Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight" in the top spot, but they also made choices that even the snobbiest aficionado couldn't question. The organ intro in "Let's Go Crazy"? Absolutely! The machine-gun guitars in Metallica's "One"? Oh my, yes! But Vince Neil's declaration that "he's on his way" in "Home Sweet Home"? Eh, not so much. -

- Austin Cyber Limits
- Austin, Texas, has long been the unsung hero for good music. While New York and LA got all the attention, Austin was busy churning out heroes like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Lyle Lovett, and more recently, Spoon. Those names represent three styles of music, but they all share one thing in
common: All three have performed at Austin City Limits, a club whose shows
are broadcast on PBS. This new official site presents the history of the show, with descriptions of each of its performers. -

- Band Names
- The inspiration behind some band names is obvious, while other names prove to be a bit more enigmatic, etymologically speaking. This site does an admirable job of identifying the namesakes, inspirations, and hidden meanings behind all those cleverly named bands of past and present. Care to hazard a guess on the stories behind some of the less-than-obvious ones? Let's start with abbreviations. Quick, what does UB40 stand for? (Hint: Think starving British artists.) Many musicians have drawn liberally from myths and legends: Incubus was named after the male devil, Foo Fighters was the slang term for UFOs during WWII, and Nine Inch Nails was the rumored length of coffin nails. Edified? Convinced? Still scratching your Portishead? Poke around for more answers to music's big questions. And if you have some facts to share, send them in. -

- Clear Channel Entertainment Artist Availability
- Ever wonder how much it would cost to book your favorite band for your annual backyard hootenanny? This list can help turn your modest
kegger into a party for the ages. Although it's intended to help colleges and other organizations find acts, the price list of entertainers lets you weigh the costs of KC and the Sunshine Band versus an intimate evening with Faith Hill. How about a comedian to warm things up? Martin Lawrence and Jeff Foxworthy each run $75K, but the fruit-smashing funnyman Gallagher is less expensive alternative only $20K. If you're really pinching the pennies, always-awkward Emo Phillips can provide uncomfortable chuckles for a mere $3K. If money is no object, the ladies of Destiny's Child will say your name for $250K, or Creed can take your party higher for a measly $150K. The prices might seem Ludacris ($60 - 70K), but your party is sure to be Coolio ($25K). -
